Short answer: No.

Long answer:

Dell supplies OEM Microsoft licenses (as do every other computer supplier) with newly purchased computers. The CD is designed to install to a specific computer (i.e. the old computer); hence, it will not work on the new 15n.

Additionally, I believe MS OEM licenses do not permit you to install on a different computer.

Drivers are available from the Dell support website.

If you want to do this, you will have to have a Full XP CD and license, which are generally quite expensive.

I am certain that all XP and Vista versions will work fine, if you have the correct CD / license (as explained previously).

Check the Dell website for drivers - but I would expect that drivers should be available for XP & Vista. If so, it will work fine.

I believe the 15n has a different wifi card, but is otherwise the same laptop.

Perhaps a 15n owner can confirm for you.

Greets,
I am a fairly new Ubuntu convert. I have a new 15n that I wanted to do the dual boot with. I have 3 legal copies of Windows install CDs. All 3 halt during initial setup with a pci bus failure error. These are old SP1 install disks but I gave up without too much digging into the system as there is not that much I need Windows for anymore. Just my own experience maybe a newer version would go off without a hitch.

Good Luck

I don't know anything about the other Inspiron laptops, my guess would be that stanardizing hardware would be a good idea but you never know. The 15n is great machine so far the feel of the keyboard and the quality of the display are major pluses for me. I am about to take it out on a road trip so it will get a good bouncing around test for a couple weeks.

Cheers

you are the only person using inspiron 15n whom i am able to contact .

I think to buy the same laptop. Before buying it i'm gonna consider your replies as a solid review upon which i have to decide to buy the same laptop

Give a review regarding sound quality, wifi card quality,cd/dvd drive, battery, keyboard, touch pad.
Can you give me a overall review regarding the laptop?

How long does the batter y charge remain?

Does dell give reformatting cds along with the laptop?

If you want to have latest win xp I can help you

Is ubuntu good to use if I cannot install winxp for any reason
Are there every software (which we use in daily life) available for ubuntu

Thank you

Wifi works great, sound is OK but volume is the only negative thing about my 15n.

I have the 6 cell battery and it seems to never run out.

I dont like touch pads I use a USB mouse.

CD burner is not too loud and works fine.

I received a standard Ubuntu CD and a multimedia player add on cd. I never opened either. I downloaded the Jaunty .iso (after backing up the system with the builtin backup program) and did a full re-install of Jaunty 9.04. For multimedia you can't do much better than VLC.

If you have never used any Linux program I would suggest trying a few distros live cds before dropping any real cash into a new system. I have been using Ubuntu on my desktop a while now. I still dual boot for gaming and the like on Windows but Linux is just plain faster and more enjoyable for most of everything else I do.

only thing i was much concerned was the wireless card becoz its just g earlier i had a/b/g and inspiron 15n half mini card when they describe wireless card?

Do they provide the drivers required for ubuntu inspiron 1545 laptop.
Did they provide the cd with drivers
I checked there are windows drivers for inspiron 1545 laptop. In the website they had no ubuntu drivers
Or the builtin backup program does it all?
