Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum, and this is my first post.
Although I've played around with Linux on and off for over 25 years, I'm still a newbie. I recently acquired a Dell Precision 490 Workstation, with the following configuration:
Two Intel Xeon 5160 CPU's, @ 3GHz
Intel 5000 series chipset
Intel 631xESB/6321ESB Ultra ATA Storage Controller 269E
Intel 631xESB/632xESB SATA AHCI Controller
SATA hard drives
8GB of RAM
Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller
Nvidia Quadro FX-3450 video card
Being disappointed that Windows XP (32bit) could not take full advantage of this machine, and trying to avoid Vista like the swine flu, I decided to see if it would run Linux. I was initially disappointed after doing a Google search and not really finding much information on this particular hardware and Linux, other than the fact that it could originally be ordered with Red Hat.
I wanted to give Ubuntu a try, but couldn't find any confirmation that it would run successfully. That's when I discovered Wubi and realized I could do a quick and easy, no risk test drive.
Installation was a breeze, and everything worked upon the first boot-up! Because of the amount of RAM I have, I opted for the 64-bit distro of Ubuntu. It recognized all 8GB's of RAM! It runs amazingly fast with no problems that I am aware of. I think I'm already hooked into being a die-hard Ubuntu user.
