Here's something I threw together quickly in a couple of hours. I know, I stole some things directly from the original ubuntu.com site, but I just wanted to get my ideas out quickly.
P.S. Ironically, I started out making a concept design for KDE.org, (they really do need one), but in truth, Gnome is my favorite DE, and Ubuntu is my favorite OS. So I decided to contribute something to software I actually use.

you're obviously a skilled designer, very nice. I would like to see a few modifications to the text through, i think its just a bit too big and seems to be spread out too much. maybe a different font. Aside from that its definitely an improvement on the existing.. are you able to create it with CSS?

few comments - green = openSUSE for me :)
the logo at the top should say Ubuntu - linux for human beings, instead of the easy operating system
other than that - nice

I'm really not digging the mac that uses AWN. It looks too much like an attempt to be OS X

Ok, so this was just a very rough concept, done for the fun of it, but here we go:
@Technique13: I can indeed recreate the layout with CSS/XHTML. As for the font, you're absolutely right.
@meborc: I did green 'cause I really, really wanted to get away from brown/orange. But it can always be changed. Also, I changed the slogan because most of our potential customers don't give a damn about this thing called "Linux". And why should they? They just wanna check there e-mail already.
@Fzang: The laptop/screenshot were just things I had on hand at the moment that I could use quickly. They can always be changed. That said, AWN simplifies things greatly. It would be great to show a default interface that doesn't leave the user feeling cheated. But not necessarily that one...
Any more questions?

I agree that linux for human beings should be kept. We shouldn't give up our values just because people don't care for them. ;)Nice work, but the brown/orange theme is what they're gonna keep and do. I would like to see a variation of the old to make it better though. I like the big easy to use buttons, I want everything using updated standards so I would appreciate if you made a live site to test that used Standards compliant HTML/CSS and an HTML5 demo video of Ubuntu instead of the crappy screenshot real they have now. I like the text on the page but it looks overly simplified. Gnome emphasizes on ease of use and power so add a little more power into the interface while keeping is simple and you've got gold.

Well, switching the colors is a matter of a few minutes. As for the text... I'm gonna have to think of something...

Switch ubuntu site to green? Stay where you are, the firing squad has been sent to your location =)
Kidding, of course. Ubuntu does not seem willing to change color for branding reasons.

I didn't see this before :lolflag:
You're right, they really could use one. Their DE looks great so I always found it surprising to find their site looking so arcane.

Actually:
The desktop will have a designer's fingerprints all over it - we're now
beginning the serious push to a new look. Brown has served us well but
the Koala is considering other options.
(Taken from https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-announce/2009-February/000536.html)
They're planning to change the colors by 9.10... which of course means that it'll probably be pushed back another year or two. :p But at least they're considering it, which is something.
(Btw, I'm pretty much neutral about the Ubuntu colors - I usually change the theme to my own, anyway)
EDIT: ...oh, right. The topic. :lolflag:
I kinda like that design. It doesn't feel quite as in-your-face and confusing as the current design.
The only advice I have is to make the page header a little smaller... the user shouldn't have to scroll down to see the important parts of the page.
