I really hate ubuntu right now. It is almost rendered useless. Two day back I install some packages using the add/remove menu option available on xfce desktop. After shutting down and rebooting later my systems was a mess.

The .bash_history file is blank and new commands are not being captured in it any more. The quit button on the xfce(even gnome) no longer shutdown the machine. They simply quit the respective panels. Even the menu options are corrupted. With xfce I only have the applications menu, but not the places menu, while in gnome the applications menu is completely blank, I have to browse for applications in the file system to run them.

What went wrong? Can any one help me out here. I could not even search for this problem on google because I practically donīt know what to search for.

Could it be the installation of openoffice 3.1 ontop of 3.0. It could not update using the update script available in the package, so i simply installed the packages ontop of the currently install 3.0.](*,)
