I have been trying to connect two laptops, Ubuntu and CrunchEee, for a day or two with limited success.

I have two network cards, both have been swapped between the two laptops. One is a Intel Pro 3845 and the other is a RaLink 2870.

The issue is the RaLink seems to be incapable of hosting an ad-hoc, but the Intel has no issue. I currently have the intel set up with a dhcp server, and I can connect via ad-hoc.

The issue is that within 5 to 30 seconds, the connection drops. Is there a problem with my internal settings, or driver issues or what? I've updated the RaLink drivers, but it doesn't seem to work well on either computer.

Both cards have no problem connecting to Infra points.

Oh, I forgot to mention I also used the ralink in windows. It was still disconnected after a few moments.

well , could be something wrong with the card , if you say that it disconnects even in windows and even when they are swapped!!

Only in ad-hoc mode, though.
I have no issues connecting to any Infrastructure access points.

how is the signal strength? is it a weak signal? have you tried the same card in adhoc with another machine
