It could just be me, but I dist-upgraded (to force X to update to 7.0.0ubuntu2) last night (20/1) and after reboot (new kernel), gnome was missing its splash screen, menu icons, and background - gnome -background-manager just segfaults.

Also, gnome-theme-manager is complaining that it cannot see any system default themes, but they are clearly still there in /usr/share/themes. I have dapper 64 bit, and it upgraded me to gnome 2.13.5. It seems it has borked gconf. I looked in synaptic and was puzzled to see that gconf version is 2.12. So, anyone had this today?

I am currently using wmaker as my main desktop, so it's not important, but it is strange.
