I was given a Fujitsu c2210 laptop two days ago, which I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on. It connects to the internet fine via my DSL modem (ethernet cable connection) and "sorta" fine with a Realtek USB stick modem, but the signal with that is so low that it's unusable outside the room the modem is in. Can anybody recommend another USB wireless modem that Ubuntu will recognize that might do a better job? I don't believe it's my DSL modem/router's fault, as my sister-in-law's Windows laptop connects with a strong signal everywhere in the house.

I can't use a card because the Fujitsu's card mechanism is broken. :-(
