Ok, I havent used Ubuntu in a while. I dug out an old dell desktop cause my current one died so I decided to install Ubuntu on it. None of the newer version would load, I tried the live cd's and alternate cds and nothing. But I had an old 6.10 disk laying around that loaded. Now that I have it up and running I can not update or upgrade using the update manager? It keeps saying the server fails but I am obviously connected to the internet cause I am making this post from the machine.

??????

Thanks in advance.

The support for 6.10 has already ended, as has support for following version, so their repositories have been closed. You are not going to be able to install any programs or upgrade from 6.10.

(8.04 is currently the oldest supported release)

Here is the article on that: http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu610end-of-life

It will help you with what you need to do...

If you wish to install 6.10 and see if your system can take the newer versions ...

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades

You may also want to try a derivative, or distro, that best suits your system specs. Here are the requirements and release notes for 8.04 LTS to compare with your system specs.

Good luck and happy ubuntu-ing.

Ok, thanks for the responses. Nothing seemed to work. I couldnt even boot 8.04. I actually got 6.06 to download and install and I have successfully upgraded to 8.04. Everything seems to be working ok.
