I am a newbie.

I know I can mail to another person in the same system , just $mail (the name of that person)

I am wondering if i can use mail command like this.

$mail name@IPaddress

I have tested it.It does not work! But I want to know why . Is it related to mail server ?

you need to send mail through a mail server. There are commands that you can use to send a message to other computers on the network but they aren't considered emails.

While sending an email does require it to go through an email server, you could always setup your own mail server. It would send the email message pretty close to directly to the target computer if it is internal. Otherwise, it would send it out to the cloud if external. Granted, that is probably a bit too much work unless you have many computers which all want to do a lot of internal communicating.
