As a complete newbie to Linux, I've been working my way through Keir Thomas's excellent Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference, and I can't find the desktop search features he talks about on page 41.

I haven't got Search and Indexing in my System > Preferences menu, and haven't got Deskbar in the Add to Panel menu.

Am I missing something?

Neither one of these is installed by default in latest Ubuntu versions. But if you want them, they are still available in the repositories so feel free to install them..

Got removed from the most recent versions of Ubuntu. They are still installable. Since you've the pocket guide you know how to install packages (if not, keep reading until you get to the sections). Look for deskbar and/or tracker in the repositories.

Oh and a good choice, the Keir book is good.
