No, Inkscape is more vector based, I believe, and GIMP is like Photoshop.

I use Inkscape mostly for designing logos and GIMP for photo manipulation & restoration. Inkscape is vector-based so you can scale images and they do not lose quality and GIMP is raster-based.

Search separately for Inkscape and GIMP on YouTube and that should help show how the applications work.

That's pretty much their best uses. Just like the Adobe programs they compete with (Illustrator and Photoshop, respectively), Inkscape is more geared towards powerful image creation, where as Gimp is more geared towards powerful image creation.
But vector graphics are nice for manipulation ^_^

I'm pretty sure that's not what you meant to say? :P

Personally, when I do drawings, I use GIMP to sketch it, and then I use Inkscape to trace the sketch and give it a nice smooth outline. Unfortunately my attention span is too short, so I haven't gotten any further than that with a drawing, although I'd probably then load the SVG file into GIMP to do some final editing with colors and stuff.

Inkscape is also great for logos and icons, since you can change the size easily without losing quality. GIMP's great for photo editing.

yeah, GIMP is like Adobe Photoshop or Corel Photo-Paint, while Inkscape can be compared to Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw.

I've never used Adobe Fireworks but from what I have seen in screenshots and videocasts, it seems to do many of the things that Inkscape does.

Inkscape is one of the most impressive, easy-to-use, and flexible graphics programs for Linux.

I've used Inkscape for:

designing logos
web site buttons & banners
web images
desktop icons
layout of comic pages & speech balloons
magazine covers
