I'm running unbuntu 9.04 on a Dell Dimension 3000 and can't get either the CD drive to recognize media or get a USB flash drive to be recognized.

Are there certain additional drivers that I need to install?

I have been able to get other USB devices like wireless keyboard/mouse to work on the USB ports.

Thanks!

Hi,
Going on my own experience, were you fiddling with something? :-)

Seriously, The most likely problem is your permissions. Go into System/Adminsitration/Users and Groups/ and unlock it with your root password. Then open your user name, and under permissions ensure there's a tick in "Use CDROM's" and also in "Access external storage devices aautomatically".

That should fix it. Post back if it doesn't.

coffeeaddict22 -Sweet. That totally did the trick! Thanks so much for helping me solve the problem. Where do I send the gift? :)

Just keep looking here. There's always tons of people who've discovered its OK to break your system here; you'll be amazed how much you know!

It's fascinating in a way. These forums truly demonstrate that (for most people) the definition of a dumb question is "one I know the answer to, and you don't".
