Hi, you won't have to worry, because using synaptic package manager, you can update the apps you use, and their dependancies, without changing kernels. You will be busy making recordings, and spending little time on
whats 'newer and shinier'.

Make a separate /home partition next time you do an install, and pick up a few dirt-cheap hard-disks, and usb-sticks, so you can experiment at will with new distros, kernels, window-managers etc, without nuking your production setup. I have two identical hardisks, each with a full studio setup, and more recycled disks with various alternate but enjoyable installations,
including Dhoruba, Knoppix 6.1, JAD with Enlightenment windowmanager, and
pclinuxos 'minime' on usbsticks -it installs just like on hard-disk, super easy :) All with zynaddsubfx, rakarrack, wine/wineasio, and a phalanx of vsts. Its all about the tunes!
