I know my way around a PC just fine, but I’m a complete linux and Mac newb.
I got (for free) a 600mhz iMac G3 with OSX panther that I want to install xubuntu linux onto.

I downloaded the PowerPC version (xubuntu-9.04-desktop-powerpc.iso) and tried it on the Mac.

I clicked on it and it didn’t install, it just opened up so I could see the files, so I tried to open\ run every single one to no avail.

How do I install it , I’m sure it’s simple but I don’t have a clue about mac or linux?

Any help would be appreciated.

The file you downloaded is correct (xubuntu-9.04-desktop-powerpc.iso). Now you have to burn the ISO image to a CD. Make sure you use the ISO burning mode (not a regular file burning mode). After that, restart your iMac with the CD inside. Hold down the "C" key as the computer powers on. When you hear the drive reading your CD, you can release the key. This should boot the live CD and let you install the new operating system.

For more information, check the links below (the instructions for Ubuntu and Xubuntu are pretty much the same):
