Found this using Google site search (http://www.google.com/search?q=3D house+site:ubuntuforums.org&hl=en&sourceid=mozilla-search&num=20&start=0&start=0):

It's free, it's Java, it's dead simple, it doesn't allow for floors or ceilings but it may be what you're after:

Sweet Home 3D - http://sweethome3d.sourceforge.net/

I've played it with it and it's really quite simple.

I have used SweetHome3D and it works OK but did crash occasionally. You can also try QCad but it has much steeper learning curve and you need a bit of experience with CAD to use effectively

screen grab of SweetHome3D in action - you can see my drawing skills need some polish!

Google Sketchup can be gotten to work with the latest wine packages from winehq (at least with the nvidia drivers)... Requires a small registry hack but other than that i have yet to have difficulties.
