I have the nvidia GeForce 9400M video processor in my Unibody Macbook (5,1). I have tried the drivers provided by update manager and when I try to have desktop effects display (Compiz) after a few minutes I have screen tearing issues and most of the time my computer becomes unresponsive so I have to do a hard reboot. I love the screen effects that compiz offers and I know my computer can handle it, I just need to know where to get a working driver for nvidia GPUs so I can enable desktop effects in ubuntu. If anyone could give me a link to direct me where to find a working driver, it would be appreciated.

If you look in the Community Documentation, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook5-1/Jaunty, it suggests there might be such a problem. Try going to nVidia's website and downloading the latest Linux drivers from them.

Good luck :D
