View Full Version : [ubuntu] Is it safe?

I am currently running Ubuntu 8.10 on my Pangolin. Got everything working as I would like. Skype and Virtualbox ( Windows XP and Windows 7 ) among installed software. Is it necessary to upgrade to Jaunty? Is it safe? I would rather not have to do a clean install if it can be avoided but don't want to run into any problems if I do an Upgrade.
Anyone use the Upgrade method provided on the Update Manager? Any issues?
What would you do?

Thanks,
Lenny

I personally prefer 8.10 and 9.04 hates my laptop.
But, I run 9.04 as a VM on my other machine and it works fine. Updating from Update Manager is easy.
Go for it.

First, what is a Pangolin? All I get is pictures of ant eaters from google.

Second, you don't have to upgrade.

Third, if you're curious, you can always try the 9.04 live cd and see how it runs.

Try 'Pangolin laptop'

I am a very inexperienced Newbie because I have been using Ubuntu only since I bought my Pangolin in February. I tried to upgrade to Jaunty, there were so many little things that needed adjusting I re-installed Intrepid. I did not have the experience to make all the adjustments.

If you check this forum for posts from late April to early May you will see that a lot of people had issues.

There is a good discussion about whether to upgrade on the first part of this thread

1142978

If you do decide to upgrade, the links to how to do it on a S76 machine are in this post

7127620

You need to update your other programs, re-install the S76 driver, and activate the nVidia driver after you have updated/installed the Operating System.

I think jimv suggestion to try Jaunty first with a live CD is a very good one. Are you personally going to gain anything from the upgrade? There is some extra functionality in Jaunty for some geek things that I don't understand. If it will help you, do it. If not, don't bother. I personally found it more bother than it was worth.

Good Luck either way, Eldera

I continue to run 8.10. 9.04 is not a revolution.

A good rule with operating systems: If it does what you need it to do and it does it reliably, leave it alone.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I have to agree with the "If it ain't broke don't fix it" school. Things are working smoothly and as long as Intrepid is supported there doesn't appear to be any compelling reason to upgrade.
Your input was appreciated.

The only way I see an advantage is to go to ext4 (at least for root, /). you'll notice a great speed difference. I swore by Intrepid, but now swear by Jaunty. Karmic Koala shows promising to.

I'd stick with 8.10, have 9.04 on my Pangolin from January. There are odd bugs here and there, once they are all fixed then I would recommend the upgrade.

I would stick with what you have that's working for now. If you're curious, trying burning a Live CD and then installing on a USB stick - to check for hardware compatibility. But I would wait for a while longer before upgrading, unless 8.10 can't do everything you want...
