Hi All,

Is it me or as of lately the server holding the forum has been down very often ? Also: the server is running on FreeBSD according to netcraft:

http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://www.ubuntuforums.org

Any particular reason why it's not self-hosted ?

Thanks in advance!

I find it very interesting that they are using Free BSD. for their server software but that maybe because the hosting service uses it. I would have thought that the site would be running their own O.S and self hosted. The site has been up and down for the past 2 days.
I,too wonder why they are not self hosted.

I saw somewhere in here (and even posted to it) that they are thinking of implementing a less-hardship-to-server-forum-style, a lighter one. may be that could solve some problems, if this downtime was not a result of a d?dos attack (i'm getting more and more paranoid everyday -I'm getting old!).

the other day they were installing some patches, but not sure about now.

We've had some errors with some of our updates - previous posts here have had issues with email notifications, etc. Hopefully the rough spots are done.

We have had issues in the past of attacks, however, our uptime is still quite remarkable given all of the bumps in the road.

As to what OS we are running and why - we have covered that in previous postings. We run the forum software on the OS that our hosting service runs.

Self-hosting is not an option currently (my garage just doesn't double as a hosting facility.) ;)

Cool, that explains it. I came looking specifically for this thread, to find out about downtime.

For the past couple of evenings I've been installed Breezy on a server, and have used these forums extensively. Then around 9PM (UK time) they disappear! *SO* frustrating! Even the google "cached" links don't work!

I've had two 2-AM finishes, after having to work things out the hard way. Of course, as soon as I wake up, and the forums are back, I find the relevent posts immediately.

Nightmare!

Thanks Kassetra!

Yeah, sure, I thought this site was sponsored by Canonical, or just by SABDFL himself :D (Of course the man is doing too much for the cause already, gotta love him!) If so, it could of course be hosted in an Ubuntu server :-)

Thank you for all the work. One of the keys for the success of K/Ubuntu is the community, and I am not bull***ing, it is something real. This site is a big part of it. Thanks!

Oh, BTW, have you thought of adding a Ubuntuforums FAQ as a Sticky in this forum ? Might save you lots of time on answering silly questions like mine ;) And maybe link the FAQ from the front page, with the typical link "About Us" or something ...

Cheers!

Nope, just by the poor soul that owns the place. ;) We've receive some extra funding help in the past, but we're content with the way things are for the most part.

The forums will go offline at 6:30pm EST today for an emergency database backup. This should last about 1 hour, we apologize for this situation but we need to take this snapshot incase of a larger failure from the hardware.

ubuntu-geek, it'd be nice if you were on irc lol..
.
IRC #ubuntuforums on freenode has been pretty busy with the downtime

Thank you for posting that message. It is much easier to deal with bad news when you know it is coming.

thanks for the heads up UG!
A suggestion: Wouldnt it be easy to just redirect the sites main page to another link which says that the site is down and will be back again at XX:XX hours?

Goodluck!
