i was playing monster rancher 2 for a while and when i was ready i turned off the game. Monster Rancher 2 automatically saves on the gba so i figured all you had to do on the emulator was just close the window. Maybe its different idk. But when i booted up again i couldnt hit continue and nothing was saved. I havent attempted to replicate this yet because it was pretty discouraging losing one hour plus of gameplay. If there was something i was supposed to do to tell the emulator to save please tell me, otherwise, whats going on? if it helps, i was running it off a zipped rom. also, i dont know if its similiar to other games that automaticaly save rather than having a save spot or menu option. i havent tried any other games yet that automatically save. thanks for your time in advance.

You should try saving the game state instead of using in-game saves. If you save state when you come back the game is gonna be exactly where you stopped. I have no idea why it didn't save normally. Use save state, unless you really wanna play the game exactly the way it was designed to.
