View Full Version : [ubuntu netbook remix] Switching from netbook remix to regular GNOME?

Is there an easy way to toggle from the ubuntu netbook remix to plain GNOME? Ideally I'd like the ability to do compiz fusion effects from time to time.

Yes, there is.

I think you have to go to Preferences > Switch Desktop Mode.

Alas, I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 and I no longer see Switch Desktop Mode in my preferences. Did I break something? If so, how can I fix it so I can switch desktop modes?

The switcher was removed from 9.10. Not sure yet if it will be re-inserted.

Is there any reason for that? Can it be installed as separate package?
I hope they will get this feature back in 10.04. This is a really good reason for me not to upgrade to newer version.

No, there is no install candidate for the desktop switcher yet. I imagine there will be some outcry about this one. I'd be surprised if they didn't re-offer it sooner or later. But I have no way of knowing for sure.

The reason is that, in 9.04, it was buggy. I guess it was easier to scrap it than to fix it.
