Problems with X-sane

Hi all!

I don't know if this is the best place to ask this, but I've been searching on the other forums and no results... I also couldn't access the x-sane troubleshooting area.

I am having the same problem with X-sane, wich sometimes I can solve uninstalling ans reinstalling it (and sometimes not): The preview window opens, but as if it was blank, without its buttons and the visualization area. I can do a preview because I remember +- the place the button is, but I can't choose the part of the image I want to scan.
I use my scanner (an HP4100) a lot, so I ask: how can I solve it? As I told before, uninstalling/reinstalling doesn't always work...

Any other software could do the job? I tried Scanner Utility, but I didn't like it.

I have trouble with Xsane and my HP Scanjet 5300c; it just doesn't work. I've fiddled and found some setting to make but that was a while ago and I have lost my notes. I did think that by this time it would have been fixed.

Interestingly, though, when I booted into openSUSE KDE LiveCd the application there (Kooka? not sure of the name of the application) detected and scanned perfectly, the first time in Linux ever!

Maybe Kubuntu includes such "goodness"?
