I have seen instructions for how to make n desktops for n graphics cards. However is it possible to make 2 desktops (each with their own keyboard, mouse and WM) running from one graphics card?

This does seem to be possible.

http://userful.com (commercial solution, but free for personal use. Single virtualized xServer, high performance approach and widely used, over 400,000 seats deployed, supports single-chip dual-head video cards)

( Pulled from http://wiki.x.org/wiki/Development/Documentation/Multiseat )

I might take a look at http://wiki.c3sl.ufpr.br/multiseat/index.php/Mdm as well

Thanks for the links, I will take a look into it. I found some info elsewhere as well, but what I found sounds like a pain to setup, unstable and slow, :(

yeah. i looked into it, and for the most part it works....

just make sure your os is 32 bit only...
plus i recommend going to http://support.userful.com/wiki/index.php/Manuals/UMx/User_Guide

and
http://support.userful.com/wiki/index.php/Manuals/UMx/Readme

and just a note* for all the time i tried getting it to work, it never did for me...
i used an 8800gt.

Good Luck!
