Well Here is my dilemma. Im due for a major upgrade (cpu / gfx card) and all that jazz. I've been an ATI man for past 15 years HOWEVER Due to all the Problems getting all my Ati products to work even tho i always figure out how to do it. It's becoming a pain in the butt. Do the Nvidia people have all these problems? Do I not know about it because I am not looking is mainly my question.

Ati card ? or Nvidia card? With my new upgrade box?

ATI has treated its customers like stepchildren; especially Linux users. nVidia all the way; I'll never buy ATI again.

Nvidia driver support is WAY better for Linux. Plus Nvidia cards just work better. ;)

actually most nvidia cards I have owned have died, my old ATi 9800XT is still alive. but yea..

buy nVidia for Linux, ATi is completely ****.

I would pick ATI. They're trying hard to make up for their bugs, and they're not soulless enough to not support an open source driver with info.

Depends on your processor, Nvidia is good with Pentium and ATI's drivers are now made to work with AMD models. For a little proof on that look at the new technology they are developing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amd_fusion

If you have the right kind of Mobo (around the 8 series of geforce) get one of the same variety and hybrid SLI (crossfire) it.

edit: I forgot this was linux for a second there :D
Nvidia makes their drivers for linux work, go with them.

you cant Hybrid SLI on Linux.

I heard that there was going to be suppport back in 08, you mean it still isn't supported?

Meh, there is standard SLI still at least.

I prefer ATI, simply because they've done more in way of releasing code to FOSS developers. Nvidia have released no code at all.

The Nvidia proprietary drivers are still better than ATI's though so if you want trouble free operation and best gaming performance you're probably better off with an Nvidia card.

I have had Nvidia and currently ATI, i wish i got Nvidia again, ATi's drivers really seem to suck on linux.
So +1 to Nvidia.

I used to be an ATI man years ago but when I started working with Linux they were less than helpful and the drivers available were a headache to deal with. So I ended up tossing all ATI video cards out and bought a bunch of Nvidia cards.

Been with Nvidia ever since. The gaming also works great under Nvidia. I haven't had a problem and highly recommend Nvidia ever since.

If you upgrade your PC regularly, then go for nVidia. If you plan to stick with it, for a long time, then I can't recommend nVidia to you. They just don't care about legacy graphics cards and because the driver is closed source, you can't do nothing about it. Remember: the graphics card you buy now, will become legacy in time. On the other hand, ATI just released the source code to the community...

its kind of funny for me, that the proprietary drivers of nvidia work better on linux than the ati ones that are "free" or "open" to talk better :S, to me makes no sense :S, i have actually an nvidia 7100gs and works great, i wish when i upgrade my pc having an AMD ATI "team", but if i'm gonna have too much trouble maybe i'll stick with nvidia x_x

Dunno, but ATI got solid drivers at the moment. So long your card is radeon 2000, or never :P

Nvidia do not want to give OSS drivers for Linux that is no fun too. :( But my GF9800GTX works just fine on Linux maybe that is most important.

ATI

Although I'm fighting the urge to swap out my 4850 for a GTS 250.

I wouldn't know I only play native games (I gave up on everything Windows recently).

I know I get great performance in Quake IV and Quake Wars.

because ATI drivers would not rotate the screen (I need that feature), Nor could modifying xorg work on them, I converted ALL of my desktops to NVidia cards.

But the issues are still there for both cards .. both holding on to their proprietary codes to run those cards to their fullest on Linux. And sometimes those codes do NOT WORK!

BUT .. the newer NVida cards also offer something that ATI does not .. PROCESSOR SHARING. IF YOU CRUNCH NUMBERS as I do, a really nice add-on!

NVidia will be the best option for you. Because ATI creates problem several times when you work with high definition graphics related works. On the other hand NVidia is specially created for high level works & gaming. So, there's no doubt NVidia will give you better support than ATI.

crunch numbers?

Google shows: http://www.small-business-dictionary.org/default.asp?term=CRUNCH+NUMBERS

In my case, it is BOINC scientific programs from The University of California, Berkeley.

The mid-range ATI cards give far better 'bang for buck' performance than Nvidia these days. However, the Linux ATI drivers are woeful at best, so for that reason go with Nvidia.

For what it's worth, I used to have an ATI and had mixed results. Things have been working much better since I switched to Nvidia.
