Getting VegaStrike to work

Has anybody installed VegaStrike and gotten it to work. I can't seem to make any headway with the game. I followed instructions on wiki, downloaded and compiled latest vsn. All went smooth and had no problems. Now when I start game I can't seem to get anywhere. Travel is slow,slow,slow. At max speed I go 2000 meters in one minute. That means it will take a week to make first destination running 24 hours a day.
Has anyone else gotten past this point? I thought about reinstalling with Synaptic but first tried that version on Kubuntu(I use Ubuntu mainly but have Kubuntu on another HD) and I still can't get anywhere.
I'd like to hear from someone who got VegaStrike installed and is playing and enjoying the game. Is there anyone out there?

Yeah i am playing the whatever version is in hardy repos.

Dont forget the spec drive - max you speed with the keypad + and then press the a key it will allow much faster in-system movement - the stars will start to streak when you get up to speed.

I have a sound issue - music ok, but no game sounds.

I have been for the last week or so - it really helped a lot.

Jump on the the vegastrike forums and ask ?s too. I don´t have an account there yet, but that´s my next move. Good luck and enjoy its a big universe out there.
