So I tried to plug my tv in to my laptop via the vga port. After having to logout/login several times and have ubuntu disregard my settings 1280x768 changed to 800x600, after login the external monitor (my tv) immediately failed to display my desktop (but it did show the login screen).

I ultimately gave up on it, reset my resolution to 1280x768 and tried to play the file on the laptop- movie player opened a window for it and then shutdown. vlc did the same. I've reloaded the video drivers and it's still failing to play video.

Sounds a bit like my problem. I have a laptop with an Intel card, running Jaunty.
I upgraded kernel and drivers due to poor video performance. Everything was fine except VLC or other video applications.

I followed this guide to revert drivers, everything worked out fine after.
