if windows 7 is everything that vista SHOULD have been, then wouldnt that make windows 7 kinda outdated? i mean, if it IS what vista was SUPPOSED to be, shouldnt it have come out a few years ago? if only microsoft didnt have to spend years fixing the bugs from their old releases, maybe microsoft would be more advanced and bleeding edge.

dawei87 may be on to something...philosophical in a way. w7 is what vista should have been but wasn't, therefore w7 is two years old and vista never existed! Problem solved. I'm sending MS my resume. Straight to the marketing department.

Microsoft is a monopoly, so they don't care if their product is not the best out there cause they already control the market and make their profit by charging you as much as they like.
If linux+mac get, for ex. 60%-70% market share, then you will see MS release a very good windows version.

Bleeding edge? All new hardware made will ship with Windows drivers automatically. So Windows will be able to use the newest hardware when it's purchased. Software? Just about everything consumer grade is made for Windows, so it's bleeding edge there too. Innovative technology? There isn't much innovating going on in the desktop market. Basic functionality hasn't changed within the last 10 years anywhere. You still have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to interact with a menu or command line driven system.

I want to bash my skull in.
But I guess I can take this one last ride and sarcastically and unenthusiastically yell "wheeeee" the entire way.

well, the hardware part is mostly true, although i do remember vista seemed to be incompatible with any hardware when it first came out. and im not talking about third party software, im talking about the windows os. i said that if they didnt have to fix so many bugs they could be MORE advanced and bleeding edge then they already are, and then maybe they could rightfully hold their place as the "best" os. maybe i should have used the word innovation as well. i think that windows still has a bit to go in some simple areas. some i have noticed have been fixed in windows 7. like when you try to close a program or remove a flash drive windows will actually tell you what application is using it or why it cant be removed, instead of just sayin "unable to eject the drive". that never helped anybody. like others have said, microsoft doesnt care about shipping a complete or working product because they own the market and people will buy it anyway. they dont strive to be the best, just own the market.
edit: i just wanted to say as well, im not a "linux fanboy" and im not trying to start any flame wars. im just pointing out some of microsofts flaws. i used vista up until i switched to linux and it was an improvement over xp for me (granted i didnt get vista until last fall after most bugs were fixed and sp1 was released) and i would be willing to give windows 7 a chance, but im not gonna pay that much for an os, so ill have to wait for/if i get a new computer that comes with windows pre-installed.
