Need advice for building a DAW.

Hey kids,

I'm looking at buying parts to build a good DAW pretty soon (read this week or the next). My question is two fold. One, is this a good build? I'll be switching between windows and ubuntustudio (the former for studio projects where I have to use protools, and the latter for personal projects). It's been years since I have built a computer, and I have not kept up much with the tech stuff behind it as well as i should.

I'll be recording to an external eSATA drive that I already have.

Second, how does digidesign's gear work in ubuntustudio? I'm looking at the 002 or 003 eventually, and perhaps the Mbox mini temporarily.

AFAIK digidesign is pretty vertical solution so that the only software that works with their hardware is Protools and Protools only works with their hardware or MAudio (light version of protools only). Protools can be hosted on Mac or Windows but not linux.

There is a range of good hardware available that works well on Linux. But you are almost certainly going to be host based rather than using outboard dsp. Luckily your workstation looks plenty fast enough.

Some M-AUDIO gear is supported, also Hammerfall PCI cards work great and Focusrite is very proactive with their firewire devices. I have presonus gear here and it works well.
