View Full Version : [ubuntu] Overuse of CD/DVD-ROM drive when Audacious/VLC Plays Audio CD

When I play any audio CD in Audacious or VLC, the program causes the drive to spin incredibly fast and generate a significant amount of noise in the process. The laptop even vibrates a bit. Making it seem like a software issue, Rhythmbox spins the disc similarly at first for about two to three seconds, then the intense spinning recedes. The disc must be spinning at half or one-third of the previous rate.

Does anyone know if there is anything I can change within Audacious and/or VLC to mimic the "quiet" drive behavior that Rhythmbox achieves? I'd like to use these programs to play audio CDs, but with the noise and heat generated during their use, this isn't practical.

The specifics of the drive are:
Vendor: HL-DT-ST
Model: DVDRAM GSA-T50N
Firmware: RV06
Media: CD-RW/DVD+-RW Drive
Removable: Yes
External: No

Thanks,
Robert
