I'm using gxmame on an Intel Atom N270 w Lucid Lynx & its super easy...
just DL http://surfnet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/gxmame/gxmame_0.35beta2-1_i386.deb then run a terminal with:
cd Downloads | sudo apt-get install xmame-x xmame-sdl | sudo dpkg -i gxmame_0.35beta2-1_i386.deb

I have now tried gxmame, xmame, sdlmame, wahcade, qxmameui and more...
alas, things are getting screwy. Everything seems to work, and just as suddenly NOT work at all. One moment the frontends lose my xmame executable, so on to sdlmame, then the ROMs are suddenly missing files when they previously worked. It is most frustrating and confusing.
I regret to say my MAME experience has been far better on Windows. And I truly regret having said that.
Please, for the love of constant nostalgia and distraction, help me.

I'm currently running SDLMame and GMameUI.
Be aware that every so often a new version of mame will "break" certain romsets, you may need to redownload a compatible set.

The latest executable path for MAME is /usr/games/mame in 10.10
I was using the path /usr/games/sdlmame in 10.04

I find mamepgui (aka. m+gui) to be the best frontend for sdlmame on Linux. Search for mamepgui and you should find a link to the latest version in the sdlmame forums.
