View Full Version : Is ubuntu dying?

Is it me or has Ubuntu gone downhill the past few years. Seems the support isn't as strong between the users as it used to be.

Can't say I have noticed.

I think this thread needs a poll :
will it be locked before or after it's moved to recurring discussions ?

I have seen a large number of people helping others on the forums and I've been around more than 2 years now. But you just can't expect 100% consistency from people sparing their personal time to assist their fellow Ubuntu users.

I check out lots of distro's.

I also like installing different software.

I have never had better help with problems than here with ubuntu.

Also, if you want to try a lot of software, either someone has packaged it for ubuntu, or has written a tutorial for it. Anything I want to install, I just google it and 99.9% of the time it's available for Ubuntu.

When I'm on say Vectorlinux, I just have to figure it out for myself, or compile things myself.

And this fact alone makes Ubuntu one of the best distro's out there.

I can easily tell that this is a troll.

The Ubuntu Community is VERY strong, so I don't see how it could be "dying".

Sorry to be the thorn in everyone's side, but I don't see this as a troll.

No, I don't think the ubuntu community is dying, quite the reverse actually. And, the only way I could see it as dying at the moment, is because it's becoming sort of like the MS (or Apple anyway), of the Linux world. Such a disproportionately large amount of people use ubuntu, that several key people may be leaving, in a futile attempt to weaken it's user base, but that's about it.

There's no way you can get anything useful from post like this.

If you're really want to know, you'll need to find out the growth trend of Ubuntu, and the retention rate.

Merely asking for disgruntled people's opinions, at best, will get you a harvest of whines and rants.

I won't believe Ubuntu is dying, unless Netcraft confirms it.

;)

But as for the Ubuntu Forum, there have been other threads about how sometimes a question languishes without answer for a looooooong time, and I think that there are real reasons for this; below are the two that spring to mind first.

So many threads! One of the first things I do when I log in, is look for new posts since my last visit. There are always 250 posts... probably the limit to the number of replies the dBase sends to the query. http://ubuntuforums.org/search.php?do=getnew

Many people post with bad (vague, unhelpful) titles and text.

Is Gentoo dying?
Is Linux dying?
Are old-school RPG games dying?
No.
Why do people ask these things?

No.

Because 1. They are curious or/and 2. They are bored. ^.^

Because the OP said Ubuntu has gone downhill, right? That makes him a troll, expressing his own opinions, right?

Everything that is living is also dying.

Started with Ubuntu 8.10 right after it came out, installing it on funky hardware (tablet pc) in a desperation move from a Vista implosion. This isn't a hobby or home pc, this was a machine that I use at work. Daily. All day long. I had to be up and running and dependable and I needed it fast.

I couldn't have gotten better support if I had paid for it! Everybody here was amazingly helpful.

Ubuntu dying? Hardly.

Maybe its working so well and all the problems are well known, that theres not much more to talk about.

What evidence do you have to show that Ubuntu is dying?

If the OP is trolling then you just fed them. If they have a genuine question, you've just made them think we're over-sensitive. Giving the benefit of the doubt and given the international audience, sometimes people don't convey what they actually mean.

I smell a troll

Honestly, it doesn't matter if the poster is a troll. I've never seen a discussion on the forums that has been turned into a flame war.

Maybe we should just stop calling people trolls? It seems like it makes more trouble than it's worth.

No way is it dying. This forum is absolutely the best support available for any OS, period. Unless you pay for the professional support from Canonical, I suppose. But I have never failed to get help here for almost everything - even when it applied to a different distro (Debian/Ubuntu-based)!

I dare say that the huge and very supporting community here is reason enough to believe that Ubuntu will never die.

Of course it's dieing. I estimate Ubuntu may die in about 30, 60 years tops.

...But obviously by then, there will be even newer and better computers. Star Trek computers, anyone? ;)

I think the thing is that there are more new users than there have ever been, and that spreads the experienced users a bit thin.

If you look behind the scenes there is more 'revolutionary' development going on now than when I first joined the community including gnome shell, the open office UI projects, X finally being made more sane and my intel graphics drivers keep being rewritten. Ubuntu is far from dying and if you can't get help in the forums you might want to google it some more or ask on IRC (or just point me to your thread :D).
