What happens if you just double-click an mp3 file? I seem to remember being prompted to install a codec.

If not sure - go to "Add/Remove Programs" and download "Ubuntu-restricted-extras". That includes pretty much every codec I've ever encountered.

EDIT: Just mentioning it's about a 50 meg download or so, as it installs a lot of other stuff.

nothing comes up when I search Ubuntu-restricted-extras in add/remove programs.

The OS sounds are working, Java app sounds are working. MP3's are not. I've tried playing them in amarok but no music comes out of my speakers.

master volume = ok ?
other file formats work well ? (flac, wav)
if you hover over the .mp3 icon you hear sounds ?

Hi Im A Ninja,

nothing comes up when I search Ubuntu-restricted-extras in add/remove programs.

Open up a terminal and try:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

and this should get you up and running. For a bit more detail about the so-called 'restricted extras' have a look at:

Restricted Formats
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/

All the best,

Andrew
