View Full Version : [ubuntu] Failed to execute child process "gnome-system-manager"

A few nights ago I was online when Firefox suddenly locked up. I went to access the gnome system manager to restart the program when I received a strange error message along the lines of: Failed to execute child process "gnome-system-manager" Input/output error

The error occurs sporadically, but always results in this error message as well as a concurrent degradation in system response time (ie, keyboard response time and programs 'greying out') and everything on my desktop becoming 'read only'.

I'm running Hardy 8.04 and Gnome version 2.22.3. Should I try re-installing Gnome entirely, and is there any way I could do this safely?
