I just saw it on the screenshot and I have to say that I don't like it :P
The ubuntu art works looks fine but this one, imho, has to be improved.
At this time I have no suggestion on how to improve it but would like to know if you like it or not.
You can see it here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperFlight3
bye,
Giovanni.

I would vote for the non-existent third option: I don't care either way. You can turn them off if you don't like them so I don't see it as a pressing issue.

I don't like it. The skewed look makes one expect a 3D appearance and the fact that the text sits in the usual 2D way on it is kind of incompatible with the shape. Also the blank space on the lower right has no function. I vote against.

I must say, that i really do NOT like it. It looks amateurish, with the jagged bottom edge. If you could get it to look more professional with decent antialiasing of that edge, then maybe... But what was wrong with the old one? Seemed more professional, simple and err... GNOMEish?

I just turn them off as well. But this (http://www.simplifiedcomplexity.com/images/screenshots/dapper/flight3/restart-dialog.png) this is giving me the creeps. Look a bit too familiar from somewhere..

hi,
it wasn't my intention to make it looks as a pressing issue; I just wanted to give and get some feedback about this topic.. so the fact you can disable them doesn't help cause from that point of view I could also get another distro or use mac os x but this wouldn't help the ubuntu development ;)
This explain also why there is no third option :D
once again: my post wasn't focused on criticize the work done by the artwork team; it's just a feedback with the hope of gain more feedback in order to help the artwork team improve and without making it a pressing issue.
bye,
Giovanni.

Personally, I think it needs to be less onesided. It's skewed, and like another poster said, the blank space at the bottom bothers me.
In the end release I assume it will be cleaned up so there will be smoother edges, etc.
As for an alternative, how about an oval. Not one of those half oval, half rectangle windows things, a real oval. People are generally attracted to round, in this fashion era, so, give them round.
I personally couldn't care for the simple fact that I don't put that much stock in what it looks like when it pops up, but if you want to make it pretty, I'm your man. ^_^

The shape doesn't bother me, althogh one based on 90 degree corners look more
professional IM(H/A)O.
The white pixels at the border seems to be a precalculated anti-aliasing made
for bright (white) backgrounds, and when applying a dark shadow it doesn't mix well.
(Taking away the dark shadow, wouldn't help, if the user wants to use a dark bg,
real time aa is the way to go (png alpha?))
Also the (i) icon on the "New updates available" seems to be resized. Not good.

Hmm, cool page, I would consider making one for Kubuntu.
Wait, Kubuntu doesn't get new eyecandy. =p
But this this is giving me the creeps.
Good for us, this only comes around on kernel updates.

I must say I also dislike the new notification bubble. It's not simple, it's not easy on the eyes and it's not even eye-candish, because of all the pixelization and the bottom right empty space. The old one was the way to go, I can't think of one reason why this was changed.

Horripilant!
I think that it would be light brown color but more more more smooth then this..

I don't like it. I think there's anothers mockups that looks like better than that.
Like the Novell ones:
http://static.flickr.com/18/70003968_3a9d9e0dea_o_d.png
With the "time out" icon, colors to differents types, etc... (more here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/gamehack/sets/1506658/))
Or an old mockup by Tuomas Kuosmanen:
http://www.tigert.com/files/uploads/gnome-notification-rss-distractor_v2.png
All without rounded corners but I think they don't need it, they look really nice.

i haven't tried it yet, but from the screenshots, it looks pretty bad... that bottom edge...
I hear you, kaamos. i hear you.

I've tried them and I saw that they looks better if you use the clearlooks theme; so maybe they was designed using clearlooks instead of human? ;)
anyway.. imho the main problem is the color of the edge that should be dark orange or brown and not grey/blue when you use the human theme. and also the edge size is too big.
I also agree that the "pixelization" on the bottom is another thing that makes it lose points.
And about the screenshots that LichiMan posted.. I like them; the colors should be changed to fit human palette but the Tuomas solution with less space on the left (having a vertical bar with a smaller with, like in the first screenshot and the icon on it) would be cool.
bye,
Giovanni.

I do not like the new notification bubble. I would go in another direction and this also goes for the log out dialog with the six icons for log out choices. Maybe I should make a mockup of what I would like them to look like and contribute. ;)
I really like the installer splash screen and overall it looks like Dapper is coming along really well!

I am also against it. I just don't see the point - the older one looks better and seems more functional. Who decides such things? I know its minimal but why go for the worse? Another thing I don't get is who claims for that ugly desktop wallpaper? Why didn't developers go for consistency with the Hoary Hedgehog release - it had a great wallpaper.
Why not using a version of this:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=31547
or that one, which would be my default favourite:
http://ubuntuforums.org/gallery/showimage.php?i=917&c=5
There are plenty of people out there who design nice artwork for Ubuntu. I guess they should be more involved with what happens with it. Probably it would be a nice idea to design something for Ubuntu like a Desktop-setup tool for new users, with which they explore the possibilities they got (metacity etc.). I mean that's a great argument for a Linux Desktop, isn't it?

Ok,
here is a test I've made:
http://www.cyberelation.ws/bubble.png
it's inspired from the Tuomas work and don't pay much attention to the text cause is just a test; also
maybe the box size is to big and the update button is optional.

Giovanni.

I really like it, Giovanni. Much better that the current one. I think it could be nicer if you do it wider and less height.

with regards to the dapper flight 3 notification bubble i dislike it aswell... but not the whole concept of it...
For sure it is in need of some serious antialiasing, but i think a very simple removal of the brown fade would improve it drastically... ( i myself am not a big fan of the brown colour scheme, even though i understand its root)
just my 2 cents...

Im loving all the new eyecandy in drapper BUT this new bubble just looks out of place and messy. How do we go about improving it or coming up with alternatives?

The bubble may nit be perfect but I think something needs to be done better than the standard box.

Exactly my thought. Annoys me a lot more than the bubbles, since the source of inspiration is so obvious... (and I think it's a horrible mix of colors)

In it's current look? No.
The old notification was not a drop dead beauty, but it was not taggy and low-res like this one. I cannot believe it to be more than a placeholder for the real version, my guess is that we will see a clean one next pre-release :)

Don't take this as a flame, but that new notification dialog is TERRIBLE....
I can't really criticize it anymore because I think everyone's already said everything that needs to be said...
I might throw in though, I also think the new log-out dialog is pretty out of place... It just doesn't look Ubuntu... (It doesn't look HIG-ish either...)
Please tell me that these dialogs were just temporary.... right???

Well this reminds me of GAIM 2....as in its a terrible design I don't think I've ever seen anything this bad before.
It doesn't go in the slightest its totaly out of place making it hard on the eyes now I can understand that a design is need but this certainly isn't it.
Its like metacity and drawing the lines when you minimise a window.
I'm sorry but you'll need to get back to the drawing board.
I personaly do like the novell way its simple and classy its not trying to be anything its trying to be something that works.
Ps: this isn't a flame this is exactly what I think when I see it I'm afraid

I just can't figure out -- what was so bad with the original one that it had to be replaced at all?

I just realized that kaamos was talking about the restart dialog, which is shown after kernel updates (for instance). I don't have anything against that one (except that it reminds me of the times when I had to restart my computer a couple of times every day).
I was talking about the log out dialog:

Fortunately, I discovered that my last upgrade removed it again. Thanks.

Ow! I think it just poked my eye out. I wouldn't mind it without the skew, as just a normal bubble, but then I didn't mind the plain yellow one either :D

I've just read in Planet Gnome...
...and tonight I put out notification-daemon v0.3.3, which contains a few nice bug fixes such as a fix to prevent notifications when the screen saver is active or when something is running full-screen. The style of the notifications has been changed to resemble the look from notification-daemon v0.2.x. It now supports theme engines, so that other looks can be developed...
It's great! isn't it??

It's great! isn't it??
For sure!
Just a question: this changed in gnome but the new ubuntu eyecandy wasn't related only to ubuntu? Or will this change affect also the look of ubuntu notification bubble?
bye,
Giovanni.
