View Full Version : [ubuntu] Nautlis LIST - ICON view?

June 13th, 2009, 01:40 AM

Here is something that has been bothering about Ubuntu and Nautilus!

If you open Nautilus, from lets say, Places-Home Folder.

You will see an option on the right to change the ICON VIEW from ICON VIEW to LIST VIEW and COMPACT VIEW. Great I like it! I use it depending on the situation.

However, lets just change an Icon on a file on your desktop for example. Its in LIST VIEW? There is no option to change it??

Is there and add-on or HOTKEY that I can change it back and forth from ICON to LIST view?

Thanks for your help.

Ahh - it took me a minute but now I'm on the same page with you;

I don't think there is a solution to this for you;
Gnome has gotten so darn good at providing a consistent interface design
that the 2 look like they are the same but they are not.

The File Browser is of course "Nautilus" which you name in your thread title,
That other Dialog is actually the generic "GTK File Picker" that is shared
by all GTK Apps, even on windoze(such as Gimp for Windows).

Your idea intrigued me, though, so I've done some googling of the web
and searching in the repos for "replace gtk file picker" and the like...
haven't found anything.

Thanks for checking into it!

Kind of wired isn't it! You would think it would be available, even if it's just using a HOTKEY?

If I find anything on my end here I'll let you know.

Not too sure about Jaunty, but with Intrepid if I right click a file in list view and select Properties, a Properties window appears with the file's icon situated towards the top left corner. If I then click on the icon, a Select Custom Icon window appears which then allows me to browse to an image file that I wish to substitute the current icon with. I know its not exactly what you're looking for, and you may already know of this procedure, but if you don't, then this may help you out in the meantime.

What you talking about is changing the Icon, that's not the issue.
The issue is in the way the files are "Listed" you can't change how your looking at those files from "Listed View" to "Thumbnail" view.

I hope that clarifies it.

Thanks for the input! :)

Here is another way to look at this one!

Open Office-Word or Text Editor.

Select FILE - OPEN

You will notice that unlike Nautilus file manager the only option to look or scroll through files is in a LIST format!

Is there a Hot-Key or addon that can let one switch from LIST to ICON view.

I got the feeling that this isn't going to end well!
