I was attempting to get my laptop, Ubuntu 8.04, to work properly with my second monitor. One thing I tried, and I lost the page now, caused the X server to not start.

I went back to older versions of xorg.conf and no luck...

At this point when I type: startx, I get

Fatal server error:
no screens found

waiting for X server to bein accepting connections giving up.
xinit: Connection reset by peer (errno 104): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

Is there a way I can completely reinstall the GUI portion of Ubuntu, including xserver and not lose my data.
