Hi all,

I've been doing courtesy (free) installations and administrations for underprivileged families here in my hometown of Penticton BC for almost a year now, and I have another computer to do next week for a deaf single mother and her three children, two of whom are also deaf. The mother, Demeri, is uber-impressed by Linux, and she had a few requests, all of which I know are possible, but none of which I have done before, so rather than appear to be stupid, which I really am, I thought I would do some research first, starting with a post to the community forums.

Here are here requests..

1. She wants to know what here children are doing when they are on the computer. I was thinking that something to record the desktop session would be ideal, but I wouldn't know how to set it up to automatically record their sessions, or how to make it save those sessions to a folder in her home folder with appropriate permissions so that only she can view them, or how to make it automatically discard old session. We both decided that two weeks of sessions would be plenty.

2. She wants to be able to limit their time on the computer to only one hour each day, but she also wants to be able to override that setting easily, as her oldest boy sometimes actually uses the computer for school-work, and her middle child soon will be. This one, I have no clue on at all, other than that fact that I know its possible.

3. Since three of the four users are deaf, she would like visual-alerts, rather than sound-alerts, for the deaf users. Again, I have no experience with this, and could use some guidance on this issue.

Any and all help on this would certainly be appreciated. Also, suggestions for anything else that might be appropriate for their situation would also be welcomed.

Thanks in advance,

Tony

Howdy,

Squid-cache with Dansguardian will solve half your problems. Setting it up on Ubuntu is quite hard though and you should look for instructions on the Dansguardian web site. Getting it to work can take a new user a couple of weeks if you have lots perseverance.

If you want a wizard to set it all up for you, then you should use Mandriva where it takes about 3 mouse clicks.

Thanks for the info.. I'll look into it. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, her power supply has died, so I'll have a little more time to look into this.
