I own a serval pro... and my buddy was asking me about how it worked. I explained how sys76 takes care of the drivers with their own repo.

He was wondering if eventually over time those go upstream to ubuntu? So say two version of ubuntu later if you pop a fresh ubuntu disk in and install it just works without the need to add the repo.

Not that it matters but I thought it was an interesting question.

I don't know if they would ever be in the official ubuntu repos, but even on a fresh install, once you add in the s76 repos everything will be fine

They've said before on this forum that they contribute patches upstream: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1024610

Here's one example: look at http://knowledge76.com/index.php/System76_Driver . I have a panv3, which was running 7.04 when I got it, and it needed the System76 driver to fix a couple things. With 9.04, though, my hardware is fully supported and the driver does not do anything.
