My home wireless router does not use DHCP to assign IP addresses to the computers connected to it. Thus we have to specify the IP address in the network connection properties..
I couldn't find a way to do that in GtkWifi.. everytime i add gtkwifi to the panel, it connects my router, but internet doesnt work, since I suppose it tries a DHCP..
can anyone help me work around this problem? I'm tempted to stop using gtkwifi..
(I'm running Breezy and gtkwifi version is 1.09)

Are you sure you have a static IP adress? Your internet provider should have given you the ip adress you shoud use. If you are unsure, you probably don't have a static IP adress. You can't just give yourself one, it won't work.
Maybe you could stop using gtkwifi and try the console command ifconfig or iwconfig instead.
Probably the wiki (wiki.ubuntu.org) will provide you some more information (about networking in general, I dont know about ifconfig/iwconfig). Otherwise you try man iwconfig and man ifconfig.

Yes, the ISP does assign an IP to the router, but I had disabled DHCP on the router to assign static internal IP addresses to the machines connecting to the router. To now connect from these machines, I have to manually enter their internal IP addresses, instead of getting the internal ip addresses from the router.
In any case, I have stopped using gtkWifi for other reasons, mainly cos it doesnt connect properly to my school network... but thats another thread :-|
