Hello ubuntu/linux users!,

For some time now I been working with KingBahamut to put this site on. Dedicated for linux gamers and ubuntu users.

(http://ubuntugaming.org) UbuntuGaming Community (http://ubuntugaming.org/community)

I hope users here contribute and talk in the community and enjoy it :)

(Also hoping for this to get pinned if possible ! :))

Didn't want to double post, anyway I'm looking for some editors (that can keep updated the main site with cedega releases wine, and games etc etc) *games that are functional in linux of course*

nice idea but.... wouldn't a proper site be better than a forum the reason i ask is because i myself was looking at setting up a communty site with a case gallery i was thinking about more of a portal for reviews, the case gallery to show off their boxes and a forum with a list of clans around.

virogenesis,

as you see people use forums more, i mean they can find/announce/post their thoughts, and there will be a portal

for reviews/releases and other things
also

the gallery was my first thought while i was talking to kingbahamut. so it will come.

Awesome! I don't care if it's a forum or other type of site, Linux needs more gaming type stuff.

Maybe you might want to consider changing the forum to something else other that phpbb...also the logo seems to be too wide.

Anyway, great effort! ;)

I don't see a problem using phpBB i take a look at the logo later

I think the reason it was said not to use phpbb, is due to it's track record of having quite some nasty securty issues. Then again, that's just a guess :D

i wonder why they always say the same things about security :P if I have a security problem and notice thats its very lethal honestly i won't risk ubuntugaming.org to go down hill for it. Of course I will change :)

Leech, i expect you to be a great help of the ug community! :) you do nice how-tos like your neverwinters night platinium :)

A piece of advise about forums in general.

Unless you have a huge hit of an idea (and sometimes not even then), having a ton of forums will actually decrease the community size. I've ran 2 boards, and currently mod on one of the largest boards on the web..and i've ran a couple boards right into the ground.

Forum condensing would probably help that out a good bit in terms of participation. Start small and grow as the community needs it.

I understand that, but take a look closely, the only reason I did subforums was because I didn't want to put a lot of forums all-together. literally we have a small community, its because the games forums are taking a bit of space

That was just a guess as far as why no one likes phpbb anymore, I recall there being a few nasty holes in it. I figure as long as something is an easy apt-get away, you can simply update when the security fixes are in place :D

Thanks, I try to help out as many as I can in switching to linux, hopefully more users = more developers = more games that run natively.

Well I'm just looking for ...

Editors right now.. and some people that runs gaming servers to do a "game party" and join up with all the ubuntu users and others of course

Also editors will take most part of it because I'm looking around so they can post Cedega releases, wine releases, some games updates, ubuntu releases etc etc.

Oh and if someone can suggest a GOOD CMS please do so! :)
(that can integrate with gallery software)

And of course anyone is welcomed to give suggestions for Modules to play for Neverwinter Nights. I have a server opened right now (password is Ubuntu) at thefnords.org:5121. It's currently running the Pool of Radiance module.

Whenever someone would like to put a group together, we could play that. I haven't joined the ubuntugaming yet, but I will when I get some more time.

Way too many forums, and waaaaay too many subforums. You are just gonna end up with a few posts in each, if that, and it's gonna be a pain to just browse around for fun - so people won't. I know I won't. There's no reason to have a subforum each for a ton of shooters, or even probably to divide the games like that.

Start with just a few forums, maybe one for installation help, one for in-game discussion, one for developing games, one for general talk, one for talking about the site. Maybe a few more. Then, when it's clear that it's needed, you make new sections and move relevant threads there.

Other than that, I'm happy that someone tries to open a site like this.

Make sure that it doesn't stay at just a forum though. Put up a wiki to collect information in a better format, build a database of games, interconnect with other relevant parts of the web - say, like appdb at wine. And so on.

This kind of site needs to become somewhat popular and successful to be useful, and that will take work. Best of luck!

There is a wiki, well http://doc.gwos.org and this have been talked with KingBahamut to cross link and updates the games (in the games section of course)

Yes, I know about that one - how about moving it or otherwise join forces? Provided he's willing, of course!

If you want to have the Ubuntu Gaming site (and with such an url, you'd better ;)) you should try to collect as much as possible there. A one-stop place is way much better than 12 scattered ones, if the one is reasonably well kept. If it's only a forum, well, then I think we could just as well stay here, in these?

Well thats a good idea about joining forces yes.

Also "it's just a forum", and there is a reason I started ubuntugaming not because I just wanted to "ohhhh lets just start this site and wala!"

Like you said a one-stop place is better than a lot of scattered sites. and the reason of ubuntugaming was to gives ubuntu users AND other linux distros users to find a community that suits them. by that I mean to bring the undecided gamers that are still dual booting or undecided in wether to change from windows to linux or not. The linux gaming in general needs more support which I want to bring generally and plus that give the community more than support and play together online.

He's got a point about the forum.
They need to be dumbed down, more general, so it'll look like there's more posts, and their not spread thin

Yea... I just don't know what I should do... I'm thinking of leaving the types only "MMORPG, FPS, adventure" etc etc

Well Linux Gaming and Ubuntu Gaming are the same thing really.
Maybe make it just Ubuntu Gaming, get rid of Linux Gaming.

Cut out the sub-forums for each genre.

That'll tighten it a bit

What I would do is keep General categories, i.e. Role-Playing, First Person Shooter, Strategy, etc. Then if a certain game starts getting more posts about it, create a subforum for it. Or you could just put up a poll each month or so on which game should have it's own forum, so we could get a good estimate on what is played most. I think that would be a great idea.

I like the forum because it brings people together.

One nice thing about all the subforums is that it gives the impression that, "Hey, there really are a lot of games that run on linux!" Dispelling the myth that there aren't any games for linux users.

Suggestion:
I would like to see the site continue bringing users together in other ways. For instance, create a section for Leagues/Clans that allows users do the following:

Search for a clan/league
Sign up to join a clan/league
See when a clan/league meets next (calendar?)
Have a way for clans/leagues promote themselves (ad box?)
Anything else?

This would have to be a totally different section than the forums, but something quite unique

Yes.. people think games doesn't run in linux but we will prove they are wrong! :)

also nice idea.. except that will take a while sadly. but should be done before the main site is done

thanks ahood

Well since people been complaning a bit about using phpBB I'm thinking of changing to SMF but I prefer if people vote so it be a fair change on users agreeing.
