I had an upgrade Breezy running superbly until last week, when I stupidly caused its demise. I tried reinstalling several times and each time received Grub Error 18. Curiousity led me to try to install Suse 10.0, it too produced error 18. Tried both FC 4 and Mandriva and both installed flawlessly. I do want to return to Breezy in the worst way.
Currently I have my computer in the shop for a HD check. But there are some questions that all of this has raised.
First, during th last couple of months when Breezy was working, each time Grub launched, there was quite a grinding, chatter, sound from the Hard Drive. The sound occurred each time with the Grub Error 18, but NOT with the FC4 and Mandriva.
Here are my questions:
-Why the grinding sound linked to Grub?
Given that the sound did not appear with my tries of FC4 and Mandriva,
I am inclined to think that it is not the HD
-Is Grub better located in / or in /boot?
Any help would be appreciated. Likely causes.....likely suggested solutions. Since I am currently partitioning challenged, I will need specific instructions.
