Ok so, I'm a new user and I've successfully installed Ubuntu and everything is working great including all of the Compiz effects so it's cool.

I was just wondering how I can obtain these widgets that people seem to have in their screenshots and videos. I've read people mentioning 'Conky' (I think that's how it's spelt) but I really have no idea what's going on.

Can someone point me in the right direction to get widgets?

Both are available in the repositories. Install the screenlets (apt:screenlets) and conky (apt:conky) packages. To customize conky, see this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=281865) and this site (http://conky.linux-hardcore.com/). There are infinite possibilities.

I'd give this site (http://conky.sourceforge.net/config_settings.html) a read, too.
