Howdy folks, this kind of question has been asked for sure many time, but anyhow i bring the troll back. I'm about to renew my desktop, and build up an new config. Focus is basic home geek multimedia box.
For my personal desktop, i always been running on AMD. But this time i'm tempted by Intel.
Which one would you recommend?
AMD Phenom II X4 955 or Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650

Just looking at the benchmark. I would go for Intel.

I heard that depending upon WHAT you are doing, they are very similar.
Some things AMD does faster
Some things Intel does faster
However, when I look at Intel chips they are 200% more money.
Therefore, I always go with AMD.

Amazing how AMD is managing to stick to Intel (from a technology point of view), being 6 time smaller (AMD: 14,700 / Intel: 83,900 employees) and selling cheaper products!

If it wasn't for AMD we would be paying out the a** for our Intel chips. Go AMD! ; )

It depends on what you're willing to spend. High end Intel, for sure are faster if money not a problem.
But AMD is better performance for each $ spent. And with GPUs taking more on, I think AMD should have a bright future. Just shame Nvidia are ahead in this and not the old ATI.

Well, at the end, only really few person are going to push their CPU far enough, during normal usage (no ultra-geek stuff and overclocking), to actually see the difference.
So i guess, i won't change my habit this time, and i'll keep going with AMD :-)
For the mother board i have selected these 3 card with the chipset AMD 790FX:
- Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P
- ASUSTeK M4A79T Deluxe
- MSI 790FX-GD70
The latest, is supporting DDR3 2133 (PC3-17066), the 2 first are limited to DDR3 1600 (PC3-12800), but more affordable, of course...
Any advice here too?
edit: DDR3 2133 (PC3-17066) is totally unaffordable at the moment ...

Benchmarks mean nothing if the price is bloated for minimal gain.
I love AMD-V for virtualization, so i'd pick the AMD.

I'm surprised by poll outcome. I thought it would be like 10-1 in Intel's favour.
AMD offers good bang/buck...but my last AMD had *major* heat issues. (Expensive aftermarket cooler. Arctic 5 silver. Correctly seated...and still 2X the temps (In Celsius) of the Intel in the house:shock:).

If the price of Intel doesn't bother you then probably Intel Nehalem.
AMD is pretty much ontop at present in terms of Bang/Buck Phenom II.
I wouldn't worry about heat issues with new AMD chips (I don't think there are any).
Stock fan should be fine, bit of Arctic Silver maybe.
Nice come back AMD.
Just read the above Link about Patents. phew that's slimey - those $"%^'s
That's like having a patent to eat poor people first, if food runs low.

yeah, the AMD heat issues have been really for the older stuff like K6-2, AM5x86 and especially the second Athlon line (Thunderbird). It's become better since.
