Reasons Ubuntu is better than Windows:

1000% better overall security. M$ has just, in recent times, jumped on the bandwagon of making a multi-user OS geared at the desktop. XP was a start (but badly done). Vista is better, but still inferior to the *nix DAC. Windows 7 doesn't appear to have changed much from Vista in this regard.

No known viruses/malware in the wild for Linux. Many viruses have been written for Linux, but real infections are unheard of. This is because of the fact Linux is based on Unix and its multi-user, DAC, security design. Something Windows has now copied.

Linux has the LSM framework in the kernel which allows various security modules to be hooked directly into the kernel. Two of the most popular are SELinux and AppArmor. Windows has no native MAC or RBAC system, or at least nothing that even comes close to SELinux. If you want more security with Windows, you must install closed-source third-party junk and pay a hefty price for it (as has always been the case).

Ubuntu has no "_NSAKEY" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSA_key) and pulling a stunt like that in the FLOSS world would never work.

Ubuntu has a repository. Something Windows does not, at least not without third party add-ons (and I doubt its efficacy when compared to Ubuntu).

Ubuntu has around 25k applications in the repository for free download.

Ubuntu uses, by default, the ext3/4 file systems which are much more efficient and modern than the ancient NTFS. Ext3/4 do not need to be defragged by the user. ext4's fsck() is a million times faster than NTFS.

No Internet Explorer in Ubuntu.

Better overall performance when compared to XP/Vista. You can benchmark for yourself or you can look at the top 500 supercomputer list. Almost 400 of the world's top 500 supercomputers run Linux. Only 2 or 3 run Windows.

Doesn't require a minimum of 1 gig of RAM like Vista does (2 GB recommended). I usually never see my RAM usage go over 500-600 MB with a full compositing desktop with Firefox, Amarok and a bunch of other stuff running.

Ubuntu very rarely has to be rebooted for updates. I was messing around with XP the other day (a fresh install) and I was amazed at how many times I had to reboot the machine. It's ridiculous.

I could go on and on.

Ubuntu vs other distros...

I've found it easy to use, nice to look at and simple to learn to do the basics (everyday tasks)

Ubuntu definatly seems far more end user and linux newbie friendly that other distro's. Both in ease of set up and use, and in terms of community and support.

Because if you run the Ubuntu CD upside down in your drive, it gives a special audio message from Mark Shuttleworth - "I AM YOUR LORD, I AM YOUR LORD. MUUUHAHHHAHA"
