yeah im kind of in the same boat as OP except im getting mine through system exchange so no option to get ubuntu pre-loaded. hopefully the graphics card is actually supported as opposed to the x1400 which i have in my e1505.

I'm in a bit of a bind; I already bought mine three months ago, and installed Jaunty 64-bit after the fact. I have to set the volume ridiculously high to even be able to hear it, and for once I have no clue how to fix it.

Everything was working fine with mine for the first few times. After a week of not using it, I tried to boot it but when I got to the login screen, the graphics were all garbled. I havent used Ubuntu/Linux in a while so I'm a little rusty.

My Setup is the standard 1545 Dell Inspiron but with the ATi Radeon graphics chipset. Everything else is the default Dell setup...Im a student. Needed budget PC.

I assume the problem lies with the xorg.conf file because I tried the option in the boot menu to reset the graphics profile (in GRUB, I chose Recovery mode and then the last option, frogot what it was called) and it didnt help. I could be mistaken, could anyoje pint me in the right direction?

Thanks.

I know that there r several problems with the ati driver

Could you suggest a work around? Or a way too revert to the non-ati driver or default Linux driver?

I don't know what happens if you buy it with Ubuntu installed, but neither sound nor webcam work out of the box on the one I just bought. Been working on the sound going on 8 hours now with no joy. Can't recommend for Ubuntu.

For those reading this thread who are tempted to do what t4ggs did and buy an Inspiron 1545 with Vista so that you can opt for an Intel WiFi Link AGN wireless chip instead of the Dell 1397 (a Broadcom chip), you can buy the same Intel chip on fleaBay for around US $15 and install it in under 5 minutes. That's what I did, and I felt way better for not paying Microsoft for a Vista license.

I don't have a clue why Dell doesn't offer the Intel WiFi option when configuring a 1545 with Ubuntu, as it is fully supported out-of-the-box with Ubuntu 8.10 and up. No driver hunting and fiddling necessary.

Buying a notebook with Vista, only to then wipe it clean and install Ubuntu does nothing but pad the pockets of Microsoft, and tells Dell that people prefer Vista over Linux. If you prefer Ubuntu, consider supporting your operating system of choice by buying notebooks with Ubuntu pre-installed by the vendor. Vote with your currency, folks.

Speakers works fine. But mic recording is very poor. Really appreciate if u could give some advice.. :)

I bought with Vista... but thought of switching to Ubuntu 'cause it takes <200MB where as Vista takes 1GB !

Install the open source Radeon HD driver. Everything works out of the box and Kubuntu is running beautifully on my Dell Inspiron e1505.

As far as I know the difference between the 1545 and the 15n is a 1545 with a 4500MHD instead of the ATI builtin and just that. The options are far greater for the 1545, like you can purchase a intel 5100 or 5300 series installed instead of the broadcrap er broadcom chipset.

I bought my dell inspiron 1545 with Ubuntu pre installed. When I upgraded to 9.04 sound was a little flaky. But I followed some of the posts regarding how to fix that in the forum.

I would also recommend like the previous post that if you are going to just be running Ubuntu on your laptop to buy that configuration from Dell. That way they will continue to support Ubuntu, that was the main reason I went with Dell for my latest laptop purchase.

Oh how I wish that option was available in Canada.
