OpenOffice Writer is for professional use, just like MSWord, too much features I don't need.
Abiword all the way, blazing fast and it offers everything I need.

I actually use KWord quite a bit and I think its quite underrated.

I think the hole KOffice suite rocks, underrated indeed.

For most of my "word processing" stuff I use pdfLaTeX.

Another vote for Abiword - it rules. Quicker than open office on an under powered system. For spreadsheets Gnumeric is my choice :)

I'll have to take a look at Abiword. I've been using OO Writer, but I agree - I really don't need all the extras that come with it...

I use Abiword, OpenOffice, and gnumeric. I prefer to use gnumeric & abiword when I can. Way faster than OOo.

Vote for gedit, here. I use it for pretty much everything other than essays and short stories. For everyday writing like code snippets, checklists, etc gedit rules. It opens really fast and basically just stays out of your way.

Used to use MS Office, but have since migrated to OO. It read my humongous spreadsheets and it actually opens them a bit faster than MS Office (after I convert them from xlsx). I then tried the word processor and am suitably impressed.

I don't really use word processors. I use a combination of text editors, MediaWiki and LaTeX: stuff that requires little to no formatting I either write in plain text or store in my personal wiki, and things that need to be formatted (especially if they will be printed) I do in LaTeX.

Do you need wine to use it in Linux??

Word processors produce ugly documents and it is a nightmare to achieve any kind of consistency with them, use LaTeX instead.

I use MS Office 2007 Word while at work, because that's what Uncle Sam provides on the computers in my office. I run Open Office on my personal laptop. It's nice that OO can open MS document formats, because I can make edits on my personal laptop after hours, instead of having to stay at the office until I'm done working on a project.

I tend to use Google Docs for quite a large part of my editing, mostly since it integrates nicely with gmail when people attach documents. Aside that, Abiword is a fine appliaction.

I never much liked OpenOffice.org, it's decidedly slow no matter the level of optimization they seem to put into it, it also doesn't fit into my desktop. For something that is normally constrained to being typing up a page of ideas it's not worth it for me. I could see how some of the more advanced wordprocessing scenerios like typing up an academic paper the functionality might be nice (back when that was part of my taskset I used LaTeX for it though it seemed easier to manage a +200 page document that way and the result looked oh so much prettier).

I tend to like Google Docs though, it's very handy.

I voted "KWord", "OpenOffice" and "Other (native linux application)" the last being LaTeX :) I also use Google Documents from time to time, mostly when I work on reports that require me to use different workstations.

Another Abiword user. Open Office is a lot more than I need for school and "ordinary use," and I don't need all the "bloat" of OpenOffice. Works better and faster on my old 'puter too.

I normally use OOo in Linux, but if I'm doing a school project, I switch over to Windows and use MS Word, because I'm more familiar, I also have OpenOffice and AbiWord Portable on my flash drive.

I achieve consistency with them, and my documents are professional. LaTeX is great for fields heavy on mathematics, but it's not something I'd ever dream of using for my work.

I like lyx

Its a friendly GUI front end for latex. I can't stand the lag between pressing a key for waiting for something to happen on the screen (openoffice) and haven't got the patience to learn latex properly! Happy compromise! I use it for anthing that I originate. For stuff that is originated by others or needs to be shared with others then its openoffice.

PS does anyone have a tip on how to share or work jointly online using odt formats

cheers

I use and recommend open office. But the company I work for has ms office, so I have to use it every once in awhile.

When I do consulting work (its a side job), or computer repair, I always recommend open office - especially to small businesses and not for profit organizations.

LaTeX beats them hands down :-) And no I'm not a mathematician. Automatically numbered lists, cross-references, TOC's, beautiful lay-out, better font quality,... just a few examples where LaTeX is much better than any word processor.

It's also much easier to use, it allows you to focus on content rather than on formatting. And you can do everything without using your mouse.

Font quality is very debatable. Besides, what's so hard about editing styles? I'm not sure what you mean by automatically numbered lists, cross-references, TOCs, etc... They are all automatic. Who in their right mind adds a manual TOC in a WP???

It's also much easier to use, it allows you to focus on content rather than on formatting. And you can do everything without using your mouse.

I have no idea how in the world it's easier to use? For example, to add a picture, I go insert picture, specify a file, then size it to what I want. Or I can write a bunch of code to do the same thing, and then double check every time that it compiled properly.

I don't get the mouse bashing, either. A mouse is a tool, inappropriate for many tasks, but certainly appropriate for others. To change the wrapping of a picture, I right click, navigate to the wrapping of a file, and change it. 5 seconds worth of work. I'd much rather size something with a mouse, than by keyboard.

This is not to bash LaTeX, but I think we're getting a little carried away here...

Obviously never used LaTeX. Using a word processor to write an assignment/essay/article drives me insane.

Meh, there are plenty of articles out there explaining the advantages of LaTeX. LaTeX users don't use it just because we think we're cool coding our documents instead of entering them into a WYSIWYG editor, we actually find it much more efficient and easier for generating good looking documents. Especially when there's a lot of maths involved.

Obviously it's not for everyone and if OpenOffice or Word works better for you then go ahead and use it.

I use Word. It's the only one I know how to use. Three months ago, I didn't even know how to use it. My school required that I learned it, so I did, thanks to some tutorials you guys helped me find.

I didn't expected that amount of people using OpenOffice and Latex...
I use OpenOffice for not-so-important documents and MS Office for those I need to prepare for my university-related work. Basically because I need to exchange documents and almost no one around uses OpenOffice. Even though, I feel that OpenOffice is still not mature enough to compete with MS in that matter. OpenOffice lack of user interaction... I mean, some basic things do not work properly (or as expected), at least in OOImpress. It is no matter of features. I think OpenOffice have almost everything that is used normally but somehow it is kind of clumsy the way it operates. Sorry for those who are developing it, but still I can not convince my wife to use it if for dragging an object is sometimes troublesome or using graphics makes everything slower... anyway... Interesting poll results.
