Just amusing thought, install a version of Linux on the IPod :p and though it would be tiny and only play songs it could make it compatbile with Linux OS's. Just a thought...Or better do a linux alternative to the IPod and make it better of course. :p

I believe that some hackers got a basic shell working and they could ssh into it remotely. But that was it. Nothing much impressive...

On the older ipods rockbox was quite good;

but un-fortunately apple put an end to that with their newer versions (5th gen +) of the ipod :(

Edit; looks like I was wrong on a number of things here, the video is of ipod linux and not rockbox. also it was the 6th gen ipod that doesn't work not the 5th, to be fair it has been a while since I looked into this.

Eh, I'd rather get a SanDisk if my iPod ever breaks. I'm a cheapskate and first-gen nanos scratch too easily.

Actually there are two projects for third-party firmwares on the iPod. The video linked is iPod Linux, RockBox is another project which is open-source but has nothing to do with Linux. They've both been around for a long time.

I was talking about getting a 4th gen not a 1st. :p And besides I wouldn't know too much about that sense I personally never owned a Ipod I've been content with listening from the labtop.

I've put Rockbox on my 30GB iPod Video which I believe is the 5.5 gen.

Yes iPods up to the 2nd gen Nano and 5.5 gen Video are "unlocked".

pretty sure it's only first gen nano, 5.5 i correct for video
same with ipod linux, due to encrypted firmware on the newer models if i'm not mistaken

Oops you're right. It's only up to 1st gen for Nanos.

btw, added bonus for rockbox: it can play doom, granted playing doom with ipod controls isn't the best, neither is the screen size, but it's kinda cool every now and then

can anyone else get http://www.ipodlinux.org/ to load? I can't nor can I find any reason for it to be down.

Interesting, I haven't been there in a couple years. I just hope it's a temporary thing and they didn't shut down the project. The SourceForge page is still up though.
