I do too, truly, but with the busy wallpapers that I like to have, ones with more color tend to look bad (at least to me they do) so I try to stick to 3-4 colors (instead of using the 10 that I have listed).

Funny wallpaper.

:D I thought so too. I think it gives it much more character (than the original wallpaper) because of the expression on the fish's face.

This thread seems to have slowed down, which is unacceptable. If it is getting stale, I suggest a mini one-up contest.

Uglify your desktop, smash color schemes and destroy good taste and pillage decency

only one rule: should still be useable for up to 5 minutes, before making the user want to hurl.

winner can have bragging rights. :)

Regardless of how it's done, it looks pretty darn cool.

I also second, third, whatever... resurrecting the ugly desktop thread. I'm quite certain I could come up with something mind-bendingly hideous with not a lot of effort.
The default Ubuntu desktop ain't exactly a looker, I should mention. World's only operating system that comes complete with desktop wallpaper of a dead dude...

Couple things. If you are going to have a dock, get rid of the launchers in the panel. Its stupid to have them both.

If you are going to have conky, get rid of the system monitor in the panel. Again, just redundant.

My new one, although Ill probably change the wallpaper soon.

Err, the human eye can process more than that. The entire point of increasing the refresh rate is to reduce flicker and eye-strain. Doesn't always work in practice; my old CRT was unbearable to look at in 75hz mode.

if there is a visible difference between two settings, you can't deny that your eye is processing something there.

Its a hardware issue, human eye process max 20 frames per sec (20 hz).
Film frame rate is normal 25 frames per sec.

Kubuntu not working (no mic in Skype and Amarok not playing)

Maybe you're not very sensitive to those things, but many people get terrible headaches < 80 hz (on crt, that is). It's not so much an issue on LCD monitors though.

I use 2 lcd's. at larger resolutions, my 17 incher, this may be true but on a smaller lcd screen 12.1 incher, 75 really makes a difference. not science just observation.

Oooh! My Little Pony! Love it :KS

I've been working on Conky all day...Fun! I have converted from AWN to gnome-do, but actually I like the normal mode more than Docky. I only used Docky because I needed somewhere to keep my window list...In the end, I have hidden both panels, for the symmetry, and because I like having my systray open somewhere and so I can see the clock if I've got a maximised window open. I've also kept the menu on the upper panel, but I don't really use it now that I've gotten used to gnome-do. And my window list is on the bottom panel (what can I say, I grew up on Windows). Now my idle memory is better, because gnome-do takes less juice in normal mode...

I also took the daring (okay, for me!) move of getting rid of window titles...I figured, hey, I know what's in the window because it's open! I don't use shade, so it was a little redundant, and has freed up some screen real estate :D Anyway, enough of my wittering on...

The rules are simple: Post screenshots to show off your tricked-out Linux desktop. Distro doesn't matter, as long as it's Linux. Feel free to add a caption about how you achieved your super-awesome, put-Windows-to-shame desktop. And, most importantly, have fun!

I'll start:

I finally upgraded to Jaunty, and I have to say it was the worst Ubuntu upgrade ever. I've spent the last three days sorting through various problems. Here's KDE 4.3 Beta 2 which surprisingly, none of the problems stemmed from.

Done it on the other sticky Jaunty desktop thread, but I must admit, you have some cool desktop stuff, those widgets that look like automobile speedometers and tacometers etc.. are the best I've ever seen.

Where'd you get those?

The rules are simple: Post screenshots to show off your tricked-out Linux desktop. Distro doesn't matter, as long as it's Linux. Feel free to add a caption about how you achieved your super-awesome, put-Windows-to-shame desktop. And, most importantly, have fun!

I'll start:

Ubuntu 9.04 with Emerald, Compiz, Cairo-dock and mplayer.

Let's see here, a lot of screen lets, cairo dock, and 3D Cube. Seen it all before, sadly. :(

Nice desktop, on the other hand.

Thanks. I didn't think that the Now Playing plasmoid ever displayed artwork. If it does, I would assume that the reason mine doesn't have any is because I'm using Juk. For some reason Amarok won't add any tracks to my collection for some reason. It's driving me nuts.

It does in 4.3 (beta included)
It's weird that your Air theme seems much nicer than mine, and I've checkout the latest revision from svn

PS: About the Amarok thing, maybe a mysqle problem (it's a dependency) or an akonadi problem

Praise Linus! I finally got Amarok to build my collection properly. I still don't have artwork on my Now Playing plasmoid, but I seem to have lost the cool circles for some reason. I'm using Air from svn also. I think the last time I updated it was a couple of weeks ago.

About your PS, yes it was a mysqle problem. It would add the albums and artists to the database, but no tracks. I ended up deleting the database. I just wish I could get 2.1 to keep scanning past 79% now.

BSD didn't work out too well, I just prefered gentoo. A big thanks to CatKiller for helping me get the monitor situation worked out. It really is a PITA to do in linux. *You either get one big desktop that messes up maximization or two seperate X screens*. I'm happy with how it all turned out though.

*Only applies if you wish to rotate one and only one monitor. Probably also if they are different resolutions.

EDIT - I know the backgrounds are different colors, just fixed that.

If you show us your KDE with Bespin and the Icon-Theme you're using, so please put as title: "KDE 4.3 ... my own mod." ;)

Isn't that sort of not the point of this thread? If you wanted to see KDE 4.3 in it's default form, there's gotta be whole web pages out there devoted to screenshots...

That is really nice, good work. :guitar:

Only thing I would change is make the panel a little thinner and have a bit more contrast between the text and background in your GTK colour scheme.

Just found your tintwizard (http://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7451069) project too by the way, that looks quite interesting.

Thanks. I agree - panel kinda contrasts with the rest of it. I should make it thinner :)

what is the music player?

It's called ncmpcpp (http://unkart.ovh.org/ncmpcpp/), and it is a client for mpd (http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/Music_Player_Daemon_Wiki). It felt a bit strange at first to control my music through a terminal but now it's just so much more convenient! :p

Mind posting your GTK theme's name (or the actual theme...)?

It's called "Candido-Light" and requires the Candido engine which you can find here (http://candido.berlios.de/pages/engine.php). I can't remember if this theme was installed along with the engine so I've attached it :)

It doesn't take all that much work. Just get a good vim colorscheme, LS_COLORS for your bash needs, man page colors, and an ncmpcpp config and you're set.

That doesn't cover stuff like cal and ping though. That I am curious on.

Nah, I like it! It's the kind of design that makes a person do a double take (is that osx?) then when they look they realize it really doesn't look much like osx at all. Very airy- I bet that layout could make even the smallest screen look bigger than it is.

Out of curiosity, which music player are you using there? The mini-mode looks very nice- I love Amarok but I can't for the life of me figure out how to enable the mini-mode. Documentation for Amarok is suprisingly sparse considering how popular it is.

The widget theme is Bespin and the Plasma theme is Air. I can upload my Bespin config if you want it.

That'd be amazing if you would. :D

The Buuf icons and Air just don't seem to work well together in my eyes. Ones going for an earthy look, the other a clean, light and stylish look.

KDE 4.3 luce bien en tu Arch pero no en mii kubuntu, estaba muy bugeado
Ah un saludo a psyfurius, lo tengo visto de espaciolinux ;).

So I had to downgrade to KDE4.3 :S. It don't look bad but I was pleased with folder previews and air theme :).

Not bad, but the numbers in your conky calendar are crooked. They don't line up.

And I love that wallpaper!

I would love to post a screenshot of KDE 4.2.4, which I just installed, but I can't. For some reason, QGtkstyle won't use my GNOME theme. It just uses Clearlooks... :(

It used to recognize my GNOME theme instantly, but I can't figure out what's wrong this time.

Is there a .deb package of Bespin available, or is it still compile-by-source?

Because I get a warning that libQt4's functions aren't available during the "configure" stage.

EDIT: Got past that stage, now I get:

make
/usr/bin/qmake bespin.pro -unix -o Makefile.bespin
/home/james/cloudcity/bespin.pro:1: Parse Error ('; customizable part you may skip if you're on OS-X or M$ ------------------------------------')
Error processing project file: bespin.pro
make: *** [Makefile.bespin] Error 3

EDIT: Nice. Root has been denied permission...

root@james-desktop:/# cd home
root@james-desktop:/home# cd james
root@james-desktop:/home/james# cd cloudcity
root@james-desktop:/home/james/cloudcity# ./configure
bash: ./configure: Permission denied

It's in the default Ubuntu repositories.
sudo apt-get install kde4-style-bespin

I'm not sure how up to date that is, you're probably better off with the version from the subversion repository.

Edit: You need to make sure the file is executable, "chmod a+x configure"

Good one Islington. The sidepane color stands out, may be you can think about that, a little brown shade might go well? just a thought.

anyway i know i have said this before, may be you can install the patched pixbuf engine from gnome-look to render the inactive buttons on your toolbar transparent as well, like in other engines. i wonder why this has never been included in Gnome officially.

I need it, please. :)
