Every laptop model is different. Success with one laptop from a vendor is no indication of the likelyhood of success with another laptop that's a different model.

Safest thing you can do is boot from a LiveCD of the Ubuntu version you want to install. That will give an accurate indication of how well that Ubuntu version detects the hardware on the laptop and installs the proper drivers. Anything that doesn't work in LiveCD mode is going to be anywhere from a little work to impossible to get working later.

Even the same model of a computer can have different hardware options. I have a Dell 1420. The Dell 1420 can have either an Intel or Broadcom wireless network card. When I got my 1420 it came with the Broadcom card. It required some work to get it functioning; however, if it had come with the Intel card it would have worked out of the box.
