Something that has really, really annoyed me for quite some time, is the startup and shutdown sounds played by Ubuntu. Here's how to disable 'em
cd /usr/share/sounds
sudo chmod -r startup.wav
sudo chmod -r shutdown.wav
cd /usr/share/sounds
sudo chmod -r startup.wav
sudo chmod -r shutdown.wav
