Request for LDAP Authentication HOW TO for 9.04

In my Grade 11 computer engineering class my final project - self-assigned - is to get an Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop to authenticate against a Ubuntu 9.04 Server and login. I got the server and desktops installed with no problem but I cannot get the desktop to authenticate against the server.

All I have found in the way of tutorials are stuff for 7.10 8.04, and 8.10. They are too confusing for me, the user whose first experience with Ubuntu Server is this...

Does anyone know of a *complete* step-by-step tutorial? By this I don't mean like the one at the help pages, which seems to assume a certain knowledge of LDAP (it says to insert this line in this file... well where? stuff like that). Could someone throw one together?
